The 4 Way Test by Herbert J. Taylor (~1932)

 4 Way Test

First of all, I want to start this post by saying that I'm making it mostly to brag that one of my students won the 4 Way Test speech contest at our local Rotary this week.

That out of the way, here's the test, as I've seen it presented most commonly:

First, is it the TRUTH?

Second, is it FAIR to all concerned?

Third, will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Fourth, will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

As far as a moral statement goes, it's pretty good at preventing you from doing bad things. I don't know that it's terribly effective encouraging you to do good things (there's no requirement to benefit people, just only to do beneficial things). Formatting is a little iffy, with the phrasing changing between the two halves, and the third point kind of being one and a half.

It does have the advantage of being fairly short (the version above is 28 words, and I've seen shorter versions).

So yeah, get out there and make sure you're doing moral stuff. I'll check back in after we go to regionals in a couple weeks.
